Super post...with s little time to read books (even great one's like Seth's) a summary of the salient points is why I read blogs!. The points around being a purple cow and having others talk about you are all about personal branding...which is super important to your networking efforts. The only point I would add to all this is to follow up! when you meet someone at an event etc, send them an email on a subject they mentioned to show you listened and care!

Most of what Godin writes is nonsense. The little that isn't nonsense is almost worthless.

I've read several of Godin's books and find they examine complex issues simplistically. Often, he uses the exceptional case and presents it as proof rather than revealing the true rate of failure.

As an example, Godin advises being The Purple Cow. Unique. A sure fire way for failure for 99.9% of businesses.

Godin talks about the payment after getting a Harvard MBA. Is that really true? Cost of attending is about $140,000 (http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/costsummary.html) plus lost income of $120,000.

Is it really worth it?

Thanks for these great points.

I would emphasize the "relationship" part, and indeed the fact that it is personal. That's what the blurred lines are about. If you are a relatively "less valuable" contact you can connect with people more powerful than yourself much more effectively if it is a personal connection than if you are trying to do a mutually beneficial deal.

In the end, personal relationships last longer than business relationships.

Your statement: Networking is about finding people that can help you.

I think that's a wrong statement to make and would educate people that TRUE, genuine and meaningful networking is about find people YOU CAN HELP, the "givers gain" concept.

That is totally fantastic. As a major Seth groupie, that was exactly what I needed to read. Now all I need is Seth On Marriage or Seth On Teething Toddlers.

Great article Jon. I'm surprised no one stumbled it when you put it up!

Jim, those are some good points about friends preferring to buy from friends. It's really true and there is no reason to feel guilty about it when you are selling a useful product or service!
